FAQs

What Does It Mean to Be a Test Knitter?

Once a pattern designer has created a sample and it has been tech-edited*, test knitters work from the tech-edited pattern to identify any instructional gaps, mathematical errors, or significant fit issues.

*Be aware that not all pattern designers use a tech-editor but to me it's crutial to assure the best and most correct patterns possible.

Thanks to test knitters, I can ensure my published patterns are accurate and complete. You can rest assured that the final projects will fit well by seeing them on various body types.

How Long Does a Test Knit Take?

It really depends. I've given my testers 2 weeks for very simple patterns, but also 2 months for larger projects. I will decide upon the timeframe depending on size and complexity, and always let the test knitter know the expected deadline before they sign up.

Where Do I Apply to Be a Tester?

If you’re interested in testing, use this link to fill out this application form. You will then be contacted when I need testers for a given project.

What Does the Testing Process Look Like?

  • Test calls are issued
  • Test knitters apply, indicating their preferred size
  • Selected testers receive a test knitter's guide, and the tech-edited pattern
  • During the test knit period, testers join an Instagram group for support, error reporting, and camaraderie. This group should be checked once a day

After the test, I’ll ask for feedback (you will receive a feedback document that needs to be returned).

Finally, the pattern is launched, and you will of course receive the final edition.

What Skills Do I Need to Test for Knitting?

While beginners are welcome, you must master basic knitting techniques, know how to make a gauge swatch, and block a garment, and agree to the importance of both. You’ll need to work from a written knitting pattern.

Will I Get Paid?

At this time, I can’t offer payment. Testers receive the final pattern. Occasionally, I provide yarn support or discounts.

Can I Use Budget-Friendly Yarns?

This will be decided upon for each test knit. Usually, the most important thing is that you meet the gauge requirements.

Can I Join More Than One Test at a Time?

Yes, but please manage your time wisely. If you believe you can meet both deadlines, you’re welcome to join. If not, please leave the spot for someone else.

Will You Use My Images Online?

I’ll only use images you’ve given permission to use.

Do You Allow Pattern Modifications?

Usually no, and if yes, only if you have gotten approval from me.
